Account SetupStep #2: Get Your Township Domain NameA domain name is a unique, personalized address that represents a given location (such as a Web site) on the Internet. As part of the standard Township package, Merit will help each Township establish, configure, and maintain an Internet domain name, using a standard name of:
your-township.mi-twp.org
Your Township will use its domain name for its website:
http://www.your-township.mi-twp.org
and for its e-mail accounts:
yourname@your-township.mi-twp.org
If you have a preexisting domain name that you want to continue to use, you will need to transfer this domain to Merit. Alternative Domain Name RegistrationDomain name hosting is comprised of two basic components: (1) registration of the domain name with a domain name registrar and (2) domain name service provided by Merit's servers. Network Information Centers, or NICs, are the authorities through which all domain names must be registered before they can function on the Internet. Because of their role of assigning domain names, they are commonly known as Registrars. Merit is the registrar for all new domain names under mi-twp.org. For other domain names you must register and pay for your name through Network Solutions at http://www.netsol.com, or, in the case of a US domain name (such as twp.yourtwp.mi.us.), with http://us.neustar.biz/. After you have registered your domain name, Merit will configure your webserver and e-mail to use the domain name(s) that you desire. |
