What is Merit Network?Merit Network, Inc. is a non-profit corporation governed by Michigan's thirteen publicly supported universities. Merit is committed to building and expanding Michigan's network infrastructure and advancing networking technology worldwide. With decades of experience in facilitating and integrating statewide networking, Merit has led network projects benefiting hundreds of thousands of Michigan citizens, from K-12 students to industry researchers. MichNet, the statewide computer network operated by Merit, provides access from computers and local area networks in Michigan to the worldwide Internet and to Internet2. MichNet pioneered Internet connectivity in Michigan and today provides the state's largest network infrastructure. MichNet has twenty-five backbone nodes supporting network attachments throughout Michigan — more than any other Internet service provider in the state. MichNet's statewide presence and geographic reach can offer significant advantages in meeting organizations' regional connectivity needs. MichNet links virtually every public college and university in Michigan to the Internet, as well as more than two hundred other organizations in education, health care, government, and the arts, as well as other non-profit businesses and, under special circumstances, industry and other for-profit businesses. Merit's customers include colleges and universities, K-12 schools and school districts, businesses, government agencies, libraries, and many other types of organizations. Through these organizations, Merit serves more than one million people in Michigan every day. In addition to dedicated connections, MichNet supports local dial-in access to the Internet from over 190 Michigan locations — more than any other provider. The dial-in network is so well distributed that more than 98 percent of Michigan residents are able to access MichNet with a local call.
